Creation
Genesis 1:1-2:3
The Passage
Genesis 1:1-2:3 is a tightly structured account: three days of forming (light, sky/sea, land) matched by three days of filling (lights, birds/fish, animals/humanity), crowned by the seventh day of rest.
What It Establishes
- God precedes and transcends everything — "In the beginning, God" (1:1). No rival, no struggle, no committee.
- Creation is by word — "And God said" occurs ten times. Reality answers to God's speech.
- Creation is good — declared seven times, culminating in "very good" (1:31). Matter is not evil; the world is a gift.
- Humanity bears the image of God (1:26-27) — the foundation of human dignity, and of our commission to rule and cultivate as the King's representatives.
- Rest is built into the order (2:1-3) — the seed of Sabbath.
Kingdom Connection
Genesis 1 is a royal text: God the King establishes His realm and installs image-bearers as vice-regents. The rest of Scripture is the story of that rule lost, contested, and restored in Christ.
